Momin Ahmed and David Perkins

I’m shocked members of the public came to the victim’s aid.

Considering how brown Birmingham is, I’d have assumed they’d have just pointed and laughed.

Birmingham Live:

A driver who ploughed into a cyclist at a road junction in Birmingham before driving off has been jailed for three years.

Momin Ahmed failed to see 65-year-old grandfather David Perkins who was flung from his bicycle and left dying on the road.

Ahmed, 26, of Villa Street, Lozells, who had previously admitted causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop and failing to report an accident, was also banned from the roads for three years.

Mr Perkins had been cycling along Reservoir Road, Edgbaston, on the morning of August 21 last year while Ahmed, in a Seat Ibiza, was coming in the opposite direction.

The victim approached the junction with Osler Street and intended to carry straight on.

“The defendant approached and intended to turn right into Osler Street. He clearly did not look properly or at all. He made that right turn and did not indicate or slow down.

“He turned cutting the junction so he was on the wrong side of the road,” said Hugh O’Brien Quinn, prosecuting at Birmingham Crown Court.

“He said he then struck Mr Perkins who was already half way across the junction. He did not stop. He carried on driving away from the scene. Other members of the public went to the assistance of Mr Perkins.

“An ambulance was called but tragically he died from the injuries he sustained. He did not report the collision. He drove home where he parked the car and went out.
